FDA Launches Web-Based Resource to Make Information About the Agency More Easily Available

January 12, 2010 Leave a comment Go to comments

Today, as the first phase of the agency’s Transparency Initiative, FDA launched a web-based resource called FDA Basics that provides basic information about the agency and how it does its work. Comments from the public, including on this blog, first suggested the idea that FDA provide basic information about the agency in a user-friendly, accessible format.  You can view the FDA Basics resource via a link in the “About FDA” section of the FDA home page, http://www.fda.gov/AboutFDA/Basics.

The FDA Basics resource includes:

  • Questions and answers about the agency and the products that the agency regulates
  • Short videos that explain various agency activities
  • Conversations with agency personnel about the work of their Office

In addition, different Centers and Offices in the agency will host online sessions where the public can learn more about a topic and ask questions to senior FDA officials about these topics.  Each of these sessions will be announced on the FDA website.

The Task Force is developing its recommendations for the Transparency Initiative in three phases.  The launch of FDA Basics represents the initial phase of the Transparency Initiative, to be followed by two additional phases.

In phase two of the initiative, the Task Force intends to make recommendations to the Commissioner regarding how to make information about agency activities more transparent, useful, and understandable to the public, in a manner compatible with the agency’s goal of protecting confidential information, as appropriate.

In the final phase of the initiative, the Task Force intends to make recommendations to the Commissioner regarding FDA’s transparency to regulated industries.

Visit the FDA Basics resource at http://www.fda.gov/AboutFDA/Basics and let us know what you think.  You can suggest additional questions and rank how useful you found the answers we provided.  Feedback you provide may be used to improve the curriculum.

The Sunlight Foundation ran a post (http://reporting.sunlightfoundation.com/2010/fda-holds-back/) stating that the FDA’s safety and efficacy reports for 9 of the 25 most prescribed drugs cannot be found online. When the agency’s documents are found online, they are in a not in a internet friendly, text-searchable format, but rather, in a highly-edited PDF document.
My blog post and thoughts about Sunlight Foundation’s findings can be found here (http://thedecisiontree.com/blog/?p=1111). One of my main concerns is that since pharmaceutical companies are allowed to direct advertising and marketing efforts at the public (e.g. television commercials), an easy-to-navigate, simple summary from an independent party, such as the FDA, is a crucial piece of consumer information.
Will the FDA’s new transparency effort improve the way the agency makes their drug safety and efficacy reviews available online?

I’m not sure if this is off topic or not, but I would really like for nutrition.gov to be easier to navigate through. As I visit the site for information to help me with my weight. Sometimes I have to click through four links before I can find what I’m looking for.

I share some of @bmossop’s concerns. I look forward to some two way communication on this blog 🙂

I would really like to see more transparency, but I am also worried. Seems they are resisting transparency as much as possible so who’s really to say what still is not being disclosed?

I think FDA Basics is a good start, but I did not find information on the topic that I am most interested in (FDA handling of allergens).
The Webinar would be more helpful if the topics weren’t so narrow and tightly controlled (ex. – Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy). I would much rather see a topic like “food safety” which would give the public more leeway to discuss issues that concern them. Also, the Webinar is targeted to bloggers, which I feel is too restrictive. I think it’s important that FDA allow the perhaps uncomfortable questions to be asked.
Some additional questions and topics that I would like to see discussed:
    1) What are the ways in which FDA regulations are formed (ex. – citizen petitions, FDA initiated activity, federal law, public hearings, etc)? I am specifically interested in whether FDA has the authority to regulate allergens in drugs and cosmetics. I have heard FDA say that its authority only goes as far as federal law allows. Doesn’t FDA have the ability to go before Congress and ask for increased authority if necessary to protect the public health?
    2) Is it currently legal for food to be genetically modified with an allergen that is not a “major food allergen” under the FALCPA (ex. – sesame, sunflower, celery, mustard)? If so, would such food be labeled as being modified?
I wish FDA would more actively participate in this blog, rather than being primarily in a listening mode. I sincerely would like to hear from FDA on some of the issues and questions that have been raised in this blog.

I’d like to say I think its a good thing the FDA is coming out and being more open to the public. Before the FDA was just 3 big letters to everyone but now with these its almost like seeing the faces behind the masks.
Also providing more easy to follow information will make future rulings from the FDA more tolerable to the American people.

I agree with Omar, Government has to not only be more visible online but more reachable too. (Although President Obama has certainly lead the way on this – his campaign is evidence of this.)
It’s quite funny at first when you see social bookmarking tags on gov sites, but it’s the way to go and makes government bodies seem more approachable.

Anything to support a healthier community. Also, for the FDA to evaluate more weight loss supplements, their safety and support those that are safe and effective.

The FDA can Comment on weight loss supplements, the can advise against certain foods and so on BUT what is going to stop a teenager from stuffing a big mac or loading up at the school cafe. In parts of Canada they have started to remove junk food from the schools cafe and school vending machines that sell junk food as well but there are no studies yet to see if it’s making a difference.

The FDA transparency to regulated industries is one of my biggest concerns because food manufacrurea would be willing to keep as much information away from consumers as much as they would like.
The main reason for doing so would be to hide any problem or efects of their products that would be of concern to consumers. I hope the FDA would take this transparency issue very seriosely so that before one buys anything, the label should tell them what they ar buying.

  40. April 1, 2011 at 2:39 am

I think their basic resource section is a great start. http://www.hghsideeffectsblog.com They regulate so much that a transparency policy that is constantly evolving I think is a really good thing to have in place.

Right keywords and phrases are important for achieving Search Engine Optimization. Keywords help in grouping your site with other similar websites in the directories and search engines. A search engine, after receiving the keywords to be searched, comes up, in a matter of seconds, with a list of websites in relation to the keywords. If you use the right keyword then the chances of your site appearing on top of the list are increased. Hence, there is more probability of users going to your site. There are many tools like Google keyword generator that help you get the right keywords for your website.

It does matter if people get information fast to make an informed decision about prescription drugs. What the FDA has done is used the fasted medium to inform all concerned parties about stages of approval and other important details. People can actually know if a drug is on the cards for earlier incurable diseases. A wonderful gesture.
